I believe that one of the key factors in managing any group is encouraging positivity and happiness. I finally got the chance to exercise that belief this earlier this year, when my family entrusted me with the planning of our family vacation to Disney World this coming Winter. Being given such a cool responsibility, I was totally over the moon excited to plan the best trip possible for my family of nine. However, it planning such an excursion was so much more than a couple magic clicks of my computer mouse. I had to work- hard.

Disney is famous for their friendly and efficient service, so there was hardly ever any frustration in that department. Nevertheless, I still had to spend two whole hours on the phone with a sweet Disney staffer named Alonso, while the two of us exhausted about fifteen possibilities for where a family of nine could all stay in the same place, while still managing to stay semi cost efficient. Not only was the cost something to consider, but there were also the opinions of each of my family members. So, my sister relayed information to my family via our family group text, while I stayed on the other line. At some point, we even had to three-way call my mother into the conversation with the Disney staffer- just to be safe.

A significant part of managing this trip, included emailing a Google doc to my family members, so that everyone could have a say. Being in charge of coordinating something like Disney World was incredibly fun albeit stressful at times. It was wonderful to get to experience management on that level with my family as the group of people. It was especially challenging because I often felt more free to argue with members of the group simply because they're my family, but I worked extra hard to exercise a positive and open-minded stance throughout the planning.

I feel that this experience will better my managing skills in the future, as it taught me to take everyone and everything into consideration and to take full responsibility for maintaining organization. It's important to me that I'm challenged and that I practice positivity and mental strength, especially when my family is counting on me. In a working environment, the ability to keep patience, the consideration of others and organization as my top priorities will help me to be more efficient in all my endeavors. It's never a cakewalk trying to manage something on your own, but I believe that staying strong in my values, optimizing my strengths, and sorting my priorities creates a solid foundation. It's also important to take note that I will inevitably make mistakes from time to time, which is what makes me human and also keeps me grounded.
